Protein Diet
It seems a higher Protein Diet is making some inroads into the carbs versus protein argument.
There's been so much noise surrounding the role of carbohydrates in effective weightloss diets that protein was kind of left out.
Now we're hearing more and more about how they play a role in proper nutrition and losing or controlling weight.
I could talk a bit about the nutrient density of most proteins but it's such a broad topic that I might save that for a specific article.
No, what I'd like to look at is a simple but critical role of a Protein Diet.
And that is satisfaction. To have a meal and feel full. Not stuffed to the gills, just sated, replete.
And not the type of fullness that wears off in 30 minutes and becomes a howl of hunger in your stomach well before your next main meal. That short-term fullness I always, maybe unfairly, blame on too many carbs in my meal. Don't get me wrong I love carb-rich foods like cereals, bread and pasta. I'm just not sure they love me back.
No, a low sugar diet isn't much fun to start with but trust me it gets better as your body adapts.
The hunger satisfaction I'm talking about is where you just don't feel hungry until right before the next meal. (Sometimes by habit you think that something is missing in your day. You think to yourself: "Aren't I usually scoffing a biscuit or energy bar right about now?" "Where's my sugar low? I can usually set my watch by it.")
A happy result if your trying to control your weight is that you may even miss the odd meal and have a smaller meal instead. Hopefully a healthy snack.
Again, maybe unfairly, I attribute this feeling full for longer to switching to a more Protein Diet.
I just find that with an egg or two or high protein nut and grain cereal for breakfast I simply don't feel the need for a 11am snack attack.
I also find that a Protein Diet gives me longer-lasting energy. In many cases, the energy it gives is more slowly released into the body than the carbs I usually enjoy.
All I know is that protein deserves its higher level of attention in the world of diets. So try a higher Protein Diet and see the results for yourself.
