Vitamins Supplements
The big debate surrounding Vitamins Supplements is whether you really need them.
One side of the debate is whether you can get all you need through a balanced, healthy diet. The other is that it's almost impossible to maintain a good diet so we need to supplement it.
Let’s first consider the case for the affirmative, that is, we need Vitamins Supplements.
The growth of supplements, multivitamins vitamin pills and the like largely came about as a result of our modern lifestyle choices. Today we lead extremely busy lives. All of us. There’s so much to do and so many people, governments and companies asking us to do more. It can be fun and fulfilling but it can also drain us.
This lack of spare time means some parts of our lives get less attention. For many people it’s the food they eat.
For instance, there’s no doubting the importance of breakfast (ideally a healthy one). But we all know people who regularly skip breakfast in order to get to work or get the kids to school.
All this rushing about and packed diaries has also seen society’s stress and anxiety levels skyrocket. Vitamin B Supplements have taken off as a result.
Not Getting Enough?
Your body only needs a small amount of nutrition vitamins and minerals every day. Some people may need Vitamins Supplements to correct deficiencies of particular vitamins or minerals.
- Pregnant women
- Breastfeeding mothers
- People who drink alcohol above the recommended safe amount
- Crash dieters or people on very low-calorie diets
- Smokers
- Illegal drug users
- Some vegetarians and vegans
- The elderly (especially those who are ill or disabled)
- Women with excessive bleeding during menstruation
- People with allergies to particular foods
- People with malabsorption problems including coeliac disease, diarrhoea, or pancreatitis
Now for the negative – that is, we don’t really need Vitamins Supplements.
The evidence for this case lies in the fact that a healthy, balanced diet will give you all the vitamins, minerals and nutrition you need.
There is no denying that the best source of multivitamins is through your diet. Even the Vitamins Supplements companies will admit that point.
The hard part is to eat a variety of food. And it’s natural, unprocessed foods that will give you much more vitamin and mineral bang for buck.
Another compelling piece of evidence is that many vitamins are water soluble. As a result they don’t stay in the body for long. Many dieticians will tell you that you pee away most of a vitamin pill. Have you noticed the color and smell of your pee after you’ve taken a supplement (especially a vitamin B).
So who has won the debate in your mind?
For many there’s a hung jury. Vitamins Supplements have a role, no doubt. But food is the best source though it’s so hard to have a healthy diet.
Gotta rush off to a Chinese meal. I may just take one of those Vitamins Supplements just in case.
Enjoy!
